I haven't posted for an age. Perhaps bullet points would be easier?
  • Work situation got more awkward. Became obvious that organisation wasn't going to get fixed anytime in the near future; and it's the sickness in the organisation which ultimately causes the problems with Nice But Disorganised Co-Worker, and Crap Management.
  • [livejournal.com profile] forbinproject got shiny new job and started coming home in the evening all bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. I get very itchy feet...
  • Handed in notice on the last working day before Christmas. Bugger the pension and the holidays, sanity is more important - and a 3 month notice period is so long it might jeopardise getting a plum job.
  • As of yesterday have shiny new job with Which? Online, with a substantial pay hike and good terms & conditions. Leaving here at the end of the month, starting there 7 Feb.
  • Evil Property Developer loses the fourth consecutive Planning Inspectorate appeal. The inspector's report is borderline sarcastic in the strongest yet rejection of EPD's arguments.
  • New Vaio laptop has arrived to replace the one nicked in the burglary.
Net result, happiness.

Wow! What great news. Sorry to hear about the job madness, which did in fact become madness, but Wooohoooo has it been fixed now! How exciting!!!! Now you get to bounce too.

Wonderful news about the EPD. I know this costs you and all of the Ilford massive huge amounts of emotional energy and time, but surely events like this must help to make it all worthwhile. Go you!

I day dream about having a new Vaio. Sigh, one day one of them shall be mine too.

PS: Great to hear from you, have been wondering what has been happening in your world, but didn't want to interrupt.

"While at present I agree that the condition of the site is poor, these matters can be controlled by the appellant or, in his default, by the Council using statutory powers."

i.e. do not dump loads of rubbish on the land and then try to use that as an excuse why he should build houses.

*snigger*

I was thinking just the other day that I had not heard from you in ages (to the extent that I checked that your LJ was still there).

So glad that the news is all good, sorry that there has been some stress in getting there.

Would be very lovely to see you soon.

Is it a standard contract term to be asked to opt out of the Euro Working Time Directive? It was in Simon's contract too; I'd expect it from a hardnosed bespoke software company, but I was kind of surprised to get it myself. However, there's an extra clause in mine saying that I can give three months' notice to opt back in again.

I'm wondering if there are timekeeping record requirements that an organisation doesn't have to do if its employees opt out. Or something.

It's not a standard contract term but it is not uncommon. I wouldn't worry about it overly. You can choose not to sign it but I wouldn't consider it a big deal.

The extra clause is actually the statutory right of anyone who has opted out. Simon has that too. Most companies fail to point it out to their employees but the person who wrote your contract both knows their stuff and has been professional in including the opt-in clause.

All organisations need to keep accurate records of the number of hours their employees take and the breaks they have been allowed, opted-out or otherwise. If someone repeatedly worked 60 hours per week for example, even if they had opted-out, if they had an accident the employer would have failed in its duty to provide safe working practice and could be sued as such.
