Music recommendations please

Watched Corpse Bride last night. I love that sort of music - satanic voodoo jazz? - makes me want to dance and sing. Does it have a name? what can I listen to? (Apart from the Squirrel Nut Zippers who seem to fit the category rather well.)
Anyone got any recommendations?

Have you tried putting Squirrel Nut Zippers (whoever they are) into Pandora (www.pandora.com) and seeing whether it can find other similar musics?

Yeah, the only restriction is that once you have had the trial you need to enter a US zip code in order to continue using it - they aren't licenced for the UK.
I made one up :o)

I think you'll find that there an awful lot of Pandora users with the Zip code 90210...

That was _my_ idea ... :-)

Ooh, ta - that looks brilliant!

Dark Cabaret

Sorry to intrude, just wandering past via [livejournal.com profile] wildwinter's friends page, hope you don't mind but thought I'd make some musical suggestions...

You would want to be trying anything by Screaming Jay Hawkins, singer of "Heart Attack and Vine", "Frenzy" and "I Put a Spell on You" (the definitive version)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screaming_Jay_Hawkins

The guy epitomised Voodoo Chic and his vocals are some of the most unique out there.

There are a few others I would probably direct you towards that share the same sensibility but might be a bit off the beaten musical track for most. It's a style known as "Dark Cabaret"

Artists I am fond of are "The Tiger Lillies" who did the Shock Headed Peter Musical. Their website and some track downloads can be found here:

http://www.tigerlillies.com/2003/index.php

The other I am fond of is "Reverend Glasseye":

I would particularly recommend checking out the track "Black River Falls" which you can listen to here:-

Hope that's of some use!

And a slightly sideways thought - might be worth picking up the game Grim Fandango; not only one of the best adventure games ever written, but (from what I recall) has a selection of excellent slightly Mexican Dark Cabaret-style music...

You mean this soundtrack? :)

It is rather fine isn't it. Also entirely legal to download.

Oh splendid - can listen to the music without having to play the game (I don't go for the computer games that are on the market).

It hasn't been on the market for many, many years. :-)

Can't help (other than The Tiger Lillies that someone's already mentioned) but I'd be interested in any recommendations that you have coming out of this. I'm a huge Squirrel Nut Zippers fan and find the idea that they fit into any sort of category mind boggling. I love the idea of satanic voodoo jazz!

totally unrelated...

I posted it yesterday!
Cannot make your party :-(
The reason is that Maisie's wedding is that weekend - has been brought forward because her father is very sick.
